Cleveland Aquarium...yea or nay

Hey all,
I was interested to know what the general opinion was about building a new aquarium in Cleveland. We haven't had one in so long and I think it would be a great addition to our city.
Here is a link to a group who could use support if you are interested...

To be perfectly honest, I don't know if an aquarium would really do much to save our city's economy but I have not been to a major aquarium outside of Metroparks Zoo so I'm all for it just for the wanting of it.

I have seen two larger cities (Seattle and the Cinci area) that have a cool aquarium. The only big advantage I saw was that it gave another 'something interesting to do' on the waterfront. If they do it it should be a combination of the canadian department of natural resources one on Pelee Island featuring local marine life combined with different regions as well.

I haven't seen the Pelee Island aquarium, but I think local wildlife and issues would be a big part of a new facility here. There should be a serious consideration given to public awareness and education at any first class museum/aquarium.

Another in the worst of ideas, the rock and roll hall of fame comes to mind as another in the tourist grabbing ideas
face facts Cleveland is not a tourtist place, lets put the same money in improving the schools and neighborhoods, and make Cleveland a better place to live!!!!

Cleveland DESPERATELY needs an aquarium. Cleveland is a beautiful city and full of history and culture. So there are tough times there, well it's tough all over for everyone. I live in Columbus (temporarily) and one of the only decent things here is the zoo and aquarium. Cleveland has so much to offer already and I think that a new aquarium will be FANTASTIC. I miss Sea World and frankly I don't want to hours to Pittsburgh or Newport, KY when we can have a first rate aquariium in the city.

Has any of the nay sayers ever stopped to think that the money from an aquarium can be used to help funds for better city services and education? Money can be out to good use for the economy, which will help build the schools and streets that some people are worried about here.

Cleveland is a maritime city, and for a maritime city NOT to have an aquarium is a CRIME.

Well, y'know what, I was out at the Zoo today, and even in 95-degree heat, there was a line-up of people who wanted to pet the stingrays and sharks. I was one of those people, and I'm very glad I had a chance to do so. I think this testifies to the fact that people in this area definitely have an interest in aquatic exhibits.

If the aquarium were researched, well funded, and well maintained, I really think it would do well.

what was the petting of the sharks and stingrays like? WIsh our aquatic area was like Monterey California's, that place is known worldwide.

Oh, the stingray thing is awesome. :) They have this large, oval tank set up, and people just take their place around it and put their hands in the water, and the stingrays just swim right over to investigate. I didn't get any sharks on my side of the tank, but there were quite a few rays. They feel...interesting. Not slimy, and not prickly, but a unique combination of both I'm not soon going to forget.

Just goes to show that dogs and cats aren't the only animals that enjoy a pet, now and again!
