Curious About Cleveland's Chinatown.

Hi! I've been in the area a few years, now. New to Tribe, and relatively new to this area.

I'd like to know if anyone's been to Cleveland's Chinatown area, or lives in or near that neighborhood. I've seen it mentioned before in the Plain Dealer. Where exactly is it? I've heard it's somewhere along Superior, but wasn't sure because I don't get a chance to go down there very often.

I haven't been there for probably 10 years, but I remember wonderful wonderful Dim Sum and a marketplace where you could buy all manner of yummy, strange, and sometimes icky Asian foodstuffs. I remember I bought a pack of 20 pairs of chopsticks for like $4 or something, and I got a bag of those squishy marshmallow candies with strawberry cream inside. Now that you mention it, I'd really like to pay it a visit again.

    Hi Joy ~

Cleveland actually has two Chinatowns, Old Chinatown on Rockwell, between E. 19th & E. 24th, and a more generic Chinatown, or more acurately, Asian Village, as there are several Asian ethnic groups represented. Old Chinatown was pretty much neglected by the city in favor of building the "Asian Plaza" on Payne, which now has fallen on hard times. It is bit hard to define Chinatown bu streets; generally speaking it runs along Prospect and St. Clair between E. 19th & E. 40th. There are several Asian restaurants, a bakery or two, in this area, among other Asian retail. Tink Holl, a large Chinese/Asian grocery store is located on E. 36th at Payne. Several smaller ones are also scattered around.

What makes Chinatown interesting for me are the Asian residents living side-by-side with Eastern Europeans. The neighborhoods just to the east of Chinatown all the way to the edge of Rockefeller Park were founded by several Eastern European groups, especially Slovenians and Serbs, also Poles and Hungarians, among others. For more on this area please read my post at flanuer.blogspot.com/. I have also posted some pictures of Old Chinatown on Tabblo at www.tabblo.com/studio/sto...iew/99872/.

Periodically I lead walk of this area if you are interested, please let me know.
